Overview

meeting the cultists

Bahnsen Knights is an adventure game for the Nintendo Switch. In this game you play as Boulder. Boulder infiltrated a religious cult known only as the Bahnsen Knights. This cult came about after the world had a series of horrible Tornadoes. It was bad enough where it turned our society upside-down.

Gameplay

gravestones handler

Boulder is undercover inside the Bahnsen Knights cult. So he has to meet with various members of the group. The first member he has to meet with is none other than Toni, the leader of the Bahnsen Knights. During these encounters you must make choices, and those choices could end up killing you. But don’t worry you can just start back at the last checkpoint or the last time you saved.
There are other elements to this game. The first is the holy cards. The role of the holy cards are to relay evidence to your handler.

  • Father Mario – used to catalog the actions of Toni’s acquaintances
  • St. Cajetan of Theme – catalog accounting docs
  • Mary Undoer of knots – catalog forged docs
road exorcism

The next element of the game is what they call road exorcisms. This is a top down driving mini-game. You have guide your formation of cars down the road. The objective is to not collide with any of the on-coming cars. The objective of the road exorcism is to weaken the incoming tornado. Yes you read that right.

doom card

The last element I have encountered in the game is a card game that sort of resembles blackjack. You have a doom card and you don’t know what the face value of the card is. You need to wager that your card is bigger than the doom card. If you lose you do have a chance if one of your other cards can add up to the doom card.

Graphics/Performance

The graphical style of the game is very much set to look like a pixelated comic book. The graphics are very basic, so there is no issue with performance.

Story

The story in Bahnsen Knights is really enjoyable. It keeps you hooked and engaged. Something about a post apocalyptic religious cult.

Sound

The sound in the game is done very well and fits the aesthetic perfectly. It is very simple, but it works. The developers paid attention to detail to the extent that you can change the music in the jukebox.

Value

You can buy Bahnsen Knights on the Nintendo eShop for $9.99. At that price I can say that you should definitely buy the game and play it. It tells a weird story, that I had never heard before. In this world of remakes and recycled idea, a weird story is a welcome thing.

Conclusion

Bahnsen Knights for the Nintendo Switch surprised me with its weird and original story. The art and music design do a good job to support and help tell the story. This game is a short game, but is a lot of fun. You can buy Bahnsen Knights on the Nintendo Switch eShop for $9.99. I would like to thank the publisher Chorus Worldwide for the review code.

Summary
Bahnsen Knights is a compelling and interesting indie game. You play as Boulder who has infiltrated a religious cult. Boulder wants to get enough evidence so to convict the Bahnsen Knights and get back to his family. He has to keep up appearances in the meantime. The Bahnsen Knights are a religious cult who believe they can weaken tornadoes by doing "road exorcisms". This has to be one of the most interesting games I have played in a while. It is well worth $10. Buy Bahnsen Knights on the Nintendo eShop today!

My interest in handheld gaming started when I was in high school. I was obsessed with getting a Game Gear. I was so excited to have a relatively high quality gaming experience (for the time) with me wherever I went! As I became an adult, handheld gaming always maintained an important part in my life. I was thrilled to take my handheld gaming to the next level when I got a Playstation Vita, and later a Nintendo Switch. My go-to genres are arcade racers, and RPGs. While I don’t really like games like Minecraft, the Dragon Quest Builders series compelled me so much. I spent over 200 hours between the two entries.

Have your say!
