Garlic

User Rating: 8

You are Garlic, an onion-headed boy, and you want to climb the Sacred Tower to meet the Cyber Goddess who will grant your wish. But then something doesn’t go as planned…

The description said such, but what they didn’t tell you is that Garlic is basically a hilarious anime/ manga comedy character with silly faces, and fall in love with the hot Cyber Goddess.

I came to this game expecting some sort of crazy hardcore platformer, the typical souls-like as everyone keep making it nowadays. To my surprise, its actually a very good platformer with reasonable challenges. Fast-paced with funny humor to boot.

There’s a lot of weird but funny minigames, such as Garlic has to walk down the road in a cool pose while avoiding shit (literally) and cigarette butts as it detracts from his “cool” points. the cooler you are at the end, the more the goddess will fall in love with you. I also come across a space invader arcade machine on the way, and Garlic made a funny face when i died in that game.

The platforming section is very engaging, as i said fast-paced with reasonable challenges. There’s a generous amount of checkpoints and if you die you simply return to the beginning of the room. Which isnt too far from your death. With unlimited life this is more like a room-by-room challenges than a long platformer.

With beautiful pixel art of varying color schemes per level, soundtrack that is surprisingly catchy, smooth fast paced animation and dashes, i find myself dying more because i was trying a cool way to get trough a level rather than dying because of the diffliculty of the game. And those style gameplay is absolutely worth it.

If you’re a fan of Super Meat Boy, Mario games and such, this game should definitely be in your Nintendo Switch.
