Some games don’t need flash and fancy graphics to be appealing,fun and incredibly addictive. TINY DERBY is a great example of this and a great puzzle game to boot!
Players control the YELLOW block on ground races and/or yellow triangle in the air races.The object of each race is simple.. WIN but it’s not going to be plain sailing without a little bit of extra help from you along the way. You see,your Yellow block is painfully slow,and from a list of available blocks at the bottom of the screen,there are certain temporary effects/abilities you can place along the racetrack.From Speed Boosts(Green with double arrow),Speed reduction (Yellow blocks of double arrow).and Stun (Red block with stop sign)..with lots more to unlock and discover along the way,from “Ghost”which makes you immune to effects,and “Swap”that will change the position of first with last.
From the very beginning,you will learn that you need careful planning,strategy and ability management skills,in order for your Yellow block to win the race. As you progress,you will also be faced with managing TWO races, on ground and air(see above photo)where,at times,your final position could depend on ground only,air only or BOTH! This will gain you stars,and i can safely say ,there is PLENTY of levels and stars to collect.Replay is inevitable to finish each race with the maximum stars!
In summary and overall,TINY DERBY is a gem of a puzzle game.Its simple to the eye,but its mechanics are very tricky and complex to pull off successfully in your first few plays. There are environments containing plenty of puzzles to get through,that will unlock on the completion of a certain area,with each level a great test of planning,skill and co-ordination. I also believe that this would also appeal to a younger generation of gamers,where the skills of correct colour identification,symbols and placing abilities down at the correct time and place,a great educational experience and more importantly,a game where all the family could sit down in front of the docked Switch and have FUN !
Don’t be fooled ! This is a very good Puzzle game indeed,and the biggest surprise so far this year! Recommended at the price too!
