I am reviewing a newly released game developed by Mudita Games and Published by RedDeer.games called Pilo and the Holobook .It was released on April 10 on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Overview

Pilo and the Professor

Pilo and the Holobook is a Adventure game set in a fantasy setting. You play as Pilo who is a Rabbit type creature who assists Professor Chiron in the lab. You will bfube using the Holobook to explore and solve puzzles. More on the gameplay mechanics later on.

Gameplay

Behold! The Holobook.

This game is an adventure style game where you will use the Holobook to scan your environment to find out more about it, and to solve the puzzles you encounter. The game begins on an Earth like planet, but quickly moves into outer space where Pilo and the Professor find new worlds infected by a strange substance called tar. The mechanic of scanning your environment to discover new things is probably my favorite part of the game since it fills up the Holobook with cool stickers that you can pick up and arrange to your liking. Your Holobook will be key in solving certain puzzles and arranging different items in a specific order is going to be part of that. I can not emphasize enough that your curiosity will be a huge asset in this game.

Graphics / Performance

Pilo and the Holobook is nothing short of a gorgeous game to play. Everything looks hand drawn, and richly colored. The colors pop on the Switch OLED’s screen. Since you will be revisiting the various planets many times having beautiful graphics to look at while wandering around filling up your Holobook is a nice thing to have. The only complaint that I have is the performance. There are certain environments that cause to the performance to plummet. Its not a game breaking problem, but disappointing, rather unnecessary problem. Hopefully they issue a patch to fix this issue.

Sound

The sound design in the game is good, but nothing stands out. The music is pleasant, but doesn’t do anything besides provide atmosphere.

Story

Visiting more planets in the XOP-642 system

On the surface you should write off Pilo and the Holobook as being a mindless game where you aim to collect all of the stickers on each of the pages. That was my first impression when I started my game. However there is a lot more to the story. As Pilo visits each of the planets, and starts to understand what is going on in this system of planets, the more he wants to help. It helps flesh out his character and the rest of the game. It kept me engaged until the very end.

Value

Pilo and the Holobook will tell you a great story and have you solve many puzzles. I spent about 4-5 hours over several days with Pilo before I got to the end. You can buy this game for 5.99 on the Nintendo eShop. This is the sale price, and will be on sale until May 1st. The regular price is 12.99. If you enjoy point and click adventures with a good story, then you should definitely buy Pilo and the Holobook.

My interest in handheld gaming started when I was in high school. I was obsessed with getting a Game Gear. I was so excited to have a relatively high quality gaming experience (for the time) with me wherever I went! As I became an adult, handheld gaming always maintained an important part in my life. I was thrilled to take my handheld gaming to the next level when I got a Playstation Vita, and later a Nintendo Switch. My go-to genres are arcade racers, and RPGs. While I don’t really like games like Minecraft, the Dragon Quest Builders series compelled me so much. I spent over 200 hours between the two entries.
